At Lafferty Mandolins, music is more than a passion. It's part of our family history, a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
Our musical roots stretch back to the 1800s in the small community of Dodsonville, Ohio, where the Lafferty family shared a love of music long before our first mandolin was ever built.
Our ancestors included Hazel Lafferty, a piano player; her father, Henry Lafferty, who played guitar; and Henry's brother John, who played the fiddle. A treasured family photograph taken at the Lafferty homeplace near Dodsonville captures this musical heritage and includes Elijah Lafferty, a Civil War veteran who served with the 48th Ohio Infantry and fought at the Battle of Shiloh.
These weren't just names in a family tree. They were people whose lives were shaped by family, history, and music. Their legacy is something we are incredibly proud to preserve.
Today, generations later, we carry the Lafferty name forward through our own line of musical instruments.
Lafferty Mandolins was founded with a simple belief: musicians deserve exceptional instruments that combine traditional craftsmanship, outstanding tone, and remarkable value.
For more than 15 years, we've worked to develop instruments inspired by the legendary mandolins that helped shape bluegrass and acoustic music.
Our mandolins are handcrafted in a small, specialized workshop in China, built to our specifications with an emphasis on quality materials, beautiful finishes, rich tone, and exceptional playability.
We believe great instruments should be accessible to musicians at every level, from those just beginning their musical journey to experienced performers and collectors.
As Lafferty Mandolins continues to grow, we're proud to introduce new models and collaborations that build upon our commitment to quality.
Among our most exciting developments is our partnership with David Harvey, former Gibson Master Luthier, whose decades of experience working on some of the world's finest mandolins bring a special level of expertise to select Lafferty instruments.
Through models such as the Lafferty Varnish Fern and Distressed Mad Monroe, we're combining our traditional designs with David's personal craftsmanship, final assembly, setup, and specialized finishing work, depending on the model.
Lafferty Mandolins is proudly connected to The Mandolin Store in Lebanon, Ohio, where our passion for acoustic instruments and dedication to musicians guide everything we do.
But the Lafferty name represents something even greater to us.
It represents generations of family history, musicians gathered together, instruments passed from hand to hand, and a love of music that has endured for well over a century.
From the sounds of a piano, guitar, and fiddle at a family homeplace in rural Ohio to the mandolins being played by musicians today, that tradition continues.
We are honored to carry the Lafferty family name forward and proud to share our musical heritage through every instrument that bears it.
